Using a Chromecast

First introduced in 2013, a Chromecast is an affordable device that connects to a TV via an HDMI connection which adds a massive amount of functionality to the TV such as the ability for it to connect to the internet and play streaming content from several online platforms. Over the years, several consumer grade smart televisions, home automation systems, audio equipment and media players have started to integrate Chromecast support without the need to purchase a dedicated Chromecast device.

ChromeOS integrates deeply with a Chromecast to allow for you to connect to any Chromecast on the same wireless network and play content or even share the screen of your ChromeOS Powered Device on a larger display wirelessly.

Sharing Media With a Chromecast

Many popular streaming services including Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Google TV and Plex all include Chromecast support into both the web-based version of their services and the Android application. When these services detect that you are on a network with a Chromecast capable device, it will include a "Cast" button on the player for the video or audio file you are planning to play. The location of the cast button will vary based on streaming service.

If you are on a network with multiple Chromecast devices, you will see a list of all cast capable devices and given the option to select the device you wish to play your media on.

Sharing Your Screen With a Chromecast

You can use a Chromecast or Chromecast Enabled Smart TV to wirelessly project the screen of your ChromeOS powered device. You will need to be connected to the same network as your Chromecast to share your screen. Casting your screen is great for presentations. However, thanks to the low-latency technology built into newer Chromecast models, it is even possible to play video games over a Chromecast. Sharing your screen is easy; simply follow the steps below:

  1. Open the ChromeOS Quick Settings Panel and select "Cast".
  2. Select the name of the Chromecast or Cast Enabled Device that you wish to broadcast your screen to.

Your ChromeOS Device will automatically connect to your Chromecast and begin the broadcast. While the screen is being broadcasted to a screen, you will see a notification in the system tray to remind you that others may be able to see your screen if they are in eyesight of the display that you are casting to.

When you wish to stop broadcasting your screen, select "STOP" in the ChromeOS Notification Tray.
