Initial Linux Setup

Setting up Linux on your ChromeOS Device is simple, however, it does require an active internet connection to perform the initial setup. This section will provide a walk-through of the process of installing Linux on your ChromeOS DEvice.

  1. Open the ChromeOS Settings Application and select "Advanced".
  2. Locate the "Linux Development Environment (BETA)" option and select "Turn On".
  3. Select "Next" on the Linux Environment Setup Wizard.
  4. Enter a Linux Username - All Linux usernames should be lower case letters with no spaces.
  5. Adjust the disk size if needed. It is strongly advised to set aside at least 16 GB of storage for your Linux Environment. However, you should increase this if your specific use cases involve heavy use of Linux, such as application development or media creation. This space is used for the main Debian installation, all Linux applications you install and your home directory.
  6. Select "Install" to start the installation of the ChromeOS Linux Environment on your device.
  7. The "Installing Linux" progress bar will appear on your screen and may take several minutes to complete, depending on your internet connection and the speed of your device.

Once your Linux Environment is set up, you will be presented with the Linux Terminal.
