Google EMail (GMail)

GMail is the E-Mail service that Google provides with all Google accounts. GMail offers a modern and feature rich interface that is used by millions of users per day. You can access the GMail website by visiting https://gmail.com and logging in with your Google Username and Password. If you have Multi-Factor Authentication setup, you will be prompted for your second factor authentication method.

Offline GMail Support (Via WebApp)

The easiest and preferred way to access GMail is via the web application inside the Chrome web browser by navigating to https://mail.google.com. The web interface is full-featured and well-supported on ChromeOS. There is a way to allow GMail to work offline when you want to catch up on emails while you are offline, as long as your device is connected to the internet to synchronize before going offline. Offline email can also help you preserve mobile data by allowing you to synchronize your email over an unmetered connection before connecting to your mobile phone's connection.

Offline support in GMail is not enabled by default, enabling offline support can be done with the following steps:

  1. Open Chrome and navigate to https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/offline
  2. Select "Enable Offline Mail"
  3. Choose the number of previous days to download emails from. You can choose from the previous 7 days, 30 days and 90 days. If your ChromeOS device is limited on storage, you should select a lower value.
  4. Choose what to do when you select "Log Out" from GMail. If this is a shared machine, you should select the option to delete all emails from the machine's offline storage.

Once you have turned on offline email support, it will take some time to perform the initial synchronize. The amount of time this will take will vary on your internet speed and the length of time you choose to store offline email for.

GMail Android Application

One of the benefits of using a ChromeOS powered device is that you can use the Android version of GMail to access your email account. The Android application includes support for offline access and new email notifications in the ChromeOS Notification Tray. You can download the Android version of the GMail Application via the Google Play Store.

Once the GMail Application is installed, it will automatically configure itself with the Google Account used to log in to your ChromeOS Device. Once the GMail application has been configured, an initial synchronization will be started, which may take several minutes to complete, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

GMail via 3rd Party Mail Clients

You may use GMail with several third-party email clients that can be installed from the Google Play Store or via Linux (on supported models only) on your ChromeOS powered device, and there are countless email clients available for other platforms such as a Windows or MacOS machine. The advantage of using an E-Mail client is they tend to offer better support for being able to read emails while offline, as long as the device was online to check for new emails.
