ChromeOS Screencast

Google's ChromeOS Screencasts is a new tool to assist with seminars, training sessions, product demos, lectures and other forms of remote presentations. While this tool does have some feature overlap with Google Meet however unlike Google Meet, it is designed for a single presenter to present to a wider audience. Additionally, Google Screencasts is better suited for pre-recorded content that viewers can consume at a later time.

As of this writing, Google Screencasts is a ChromeOS exclusive feature and can be launched via the "Screencast" icon found in the ChromeOS Application Launcher.

Presenter Tools

While you conduct a session, the contents of your screen are automatically recorded, as well as your webcam and microphone. It is important to ensure that you have closed any window or application that may contain information you wish not to show up in the recording before starting the screencast.

Google Screencasts has several tools to allow users to effortlessly create engaging screencasts. In addition to being able to share your screen; these tools include a whiteboard and live webcam to allow a presenter to connect to their users in a more personalized way.

While using Google Screencasts, you will see the ChromeOS presenter tools appear in the ChromeOS system tray. This will be how you can stop the screen capture and use the whiteboard features to draw on your screen. Your webcam and microphone will be active while conducting a screencast; however, it is possible to mute your microphone and disable your webcam if you wish.

Session Transcriptions

All Google Screencast Sessions are automatically transcribed, allowing users to review the written transcriptions at a later time. Users can search in the transcribed text and view the recording at that specific point where the piece of text was found.

Session Archiving

Upon completion of your Screencast, the Screencast application will automatically archive your recording to Google's cloud. Once the upload has completed, you will be given the option to share your screencast with other users or to delete the screencast.

When sharing a screencast, you will be able to either make the screencast public so anyone with the direct link to the screencast can view, or you may choose to restrict the screencast to a specific user or a list of specific users.

If you are using a managed ChromeOS device, your administrator may apply restrictions on who you may share screencasts with, as well as set retention policies.
