Chrome Web Store

The Chrome Web Store is the primary distribution method for Chrome Extensions and Chrome Browser Themes. The Chrome Web Store contains thousands of free and paid options for end users to take advantage of.

Chrome Application Permissions

Developers of ChromeOS extensions published on the Chrome Web Store must provide a manifest detailing the permissions their application requires to function. When you install an app or extension from the Chrome Web Store, you'll be prompted to approve these permissions. This process is designed to enhance data security and promote transparency around privacy. If a developer later updates the extension to request additional permissions, ChromeOS will automatically disable the extension until you review and approve the changes.

You remain in control of what an extension can access on your ChromeOS device. Permissions can be revoked or modified at any time through the ChromeOS Settings app.

Chrome Web Store Application/Theme/Extension Updates

Unlike other application distribution platforms, products on the Chrome Web Store update automatically in the background without any interaction by the end user as long as the ChromeOS device is connected to the internet.

Application Updates with Permission Changes

If an application developer updates a ChromeOS application with a new version that requires additional permissions on your device, the extension will be disabled, and the user will be prompted to accept the updated permissions before the extension can be re-activated.
