ChromeOS Connected Devices

ChromeOS connected devices is a relatively new feature in ChromeOS that is undergoing active development to help integrate ChromeOS devices with Android phones. Currently, Connected Devices are still experimental and more features are being introduced with ChromeOS updates.

Android Phone

If you have a supported Android Phone, you will be able to set up integration between that phone and your ChromeOS Device. Your phone must be set up with the same Google account that your ChromeOS is set up with, or you will not be able to link your phone to your ChromeOS Device. Some of these features may not work with all Android phones, and some may require optional features on your mobile phone plan.

Smart Lock

The ChromeOS Smart Lock will allow you to quickly unlock your ChromeOS device with your phone by simply unlocking your phone's screen, as long as your phone is located near your ChromeOS Device. You can unlock your phone with any authentication method you choose, including passwords, fingerprint or iris scans.

Instant Tethering

ChromeOS Instant Tethering will allow you to automatically turn on mobile internet sharing on your mobile phone and your ChromeOS device will automatically connect to your phone to establish an internet connection. This lets you use your phone's 2G/3G/4G LTE and 5G's internet connection. While instant tethering is active, you will be able to see your phone's battery life and signal strength in the Connected Device Settings screen.

Instant Tethering uses the data allotment on your mobile phone, and you must be on a rate plan that supports tethering (often called mobile hotspot). If you are on a metered rate plan, it is important to monitor your data use, or you may incur additional charges from your phone provider.

Messages

This will allow you to read/send SMS messages from your ChromeOS device using your phone. You must be using the Google Messages application and not a third-party SMS client for this to work. When this feature is active, your ChromeOS Device will receive notifications, and clicking on the SMS will launch the ChromeOS SMS application. Your phone doest not to be in range of your ChromeOS Device for this to function if your mobile phone provider supports RCS.

Phone Hub

The ChromeOS Phone Hub allows you to interact with your phone via the ChromeOS desktop. In addition to being able to see your phone's battery and signal strength, you can quickly enable Instant Tethering, turn on silent mode to silent all alerts on your phone, and you can even locate a lost phone with a single click.

Phone Hub - Notifications

The Phone Hub Notifications feature will allow you to synchronize the notifications that appear on your phone to your ChromeOS Device. Upon activating this feature, you will need to follow a few steps that will appear on your phone to allow Google Play Services to be able to activate notifications.

If the application that generates the alert has the ability to preform a quick response, you will be able to respond on your ChromeOS device; this is useful for other messages applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Telegram.

Recent Chrome Tabs

With Recent Chrome Tabs active, you will be able to see your two most recent websites that you have open on your mobile phone. These tabs will appear in the Phone Hub that is located directly next to the ChromeOS quick action center.

Forget Phone

By choosing the Forget Phone, it will automatically deactivate all Connected Device features. You can then set up a new phone if you wish to reactivate this feature.
