Important Safety Notice

Enabling Developer Mode will:

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Back Up Your Data

    • Save all important files to Google Drive or external storage
    • Make note of any important settings you'll want to restore later
  2. Enter Recovery Mode

    • Power down your Chromebox completely
    • Insert a paperclip or SIM removal tool into the recovery button hole (location varies by model)
    • While pressing the recovery button, power on the Chromebox
    • Keep holding the recovery button until the recovery screen appears
  3. Enter Developer Mode

    • When the recovery screen appears, press Ctrl + D
    • The screen will ask if you want to turn OS verification off
    • Press Enter to confirm
    • Wait while the system prepares for Developer Mode (this can take 15-20 minutes)
  4. Initial Boot Process

    • Once the preparation is complete, the Chromebox will restart
    • You'll see a screen warning that OS verification is OFF
    • Wait 30 seconds for the transition screen to pass, or
    • Press Ctrl + D to bypass the warning immediately
  5. Complete Setup

    • After the boot completes, you'll need to go through the initial setup again
    • Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with your Google account
    • Developer Mode is now active
  6. Verify Developer Mode

    • Open Chrome browser
    • Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open the Chrome OS terminal (crosh)
    • Type "shell" and press Enter
    • If you get a shell prompt ($), Developer Mode is working

Important Notes

  • Every time you restart your Chromebox, you'll see the OS verification warning
  • You must press Ctrl + D or wait 30 seconds at this screen to continue booting
  • Pressing Space at the warning screen will disable Developer Mode and restore the device to its factory state
  • Keep your device physically secure, as Developer Mode allows unrestricted system access

Additional Security Considerations

  • In Developer Mode, your Acer Chromebox CXI3 is more vulnerable to unauthorized access
  • Local data is not encrypted in the same way as normal mode
