Valve Steam on ChromeOS

Valve Steam Is a Large Application

Steam is a large application that will consume a significant amount of disk space on your ChromeOS device. It is also better suited to higher end ChromeOS devices and may not perform well on lower-end ChromeOS devices. Steam games will also cobsume a large amount of space on your device which may limit its use on machines with smaller disks. Performance will also vary based on the game and the hardware of your ChromeOS device. Some games may not run at all on your ChromeOS device. Some ChromeOS devices do officially support Steam and if yours is on the officially supported list of devices, you do not need to follow the steps on this page as the Steam Client will already be installed on your device.

Steam is a popular game launcher and distribution platform that allows you to purchase PC games. Although most games are released for Windows, Steam includes a specialized runtime called Proton which allows you to run many Windows games on your ChromeOS Device without the need for developers to provide a native Linux build of their software.

Games purchased through Steam are not managed by the Google Play Store or Google, Google or the ChromeOS Team are unable to guarantee how each game will perform. When selecting a game from Steam's extensive catalog of games, you will need to read and understand all the system requirements needed by the game. You should also read reviews to see how it performs on Linux. If you are unsure of your ChromeOS Device Specifications, you should locate your device on the ChromeOS Guide Device Directory.

Installing Steam

You can install the Steam Client on a Intel or AMD based ChromeOS device by running the following on the ChromeOS Linux Terminal

Once installed, Steam will be accessable in your ChromeOS Application Launcher.
